The chosen system utilized a heavy-duty "clam shell"
grab supported from an automated overhead crane, accumulating
powered roller conveyors and an "upender". In response
to an operator signal, the slit rolls were precisely
grabbed from one of two positions at the slitter. The
crane was then programmed to lift the rolls and follow
a set route to an awaiting pallet on the powered roller
conveyor. A rotating shuttle conveyor was used to send
rolls to one of two lines. One line would first upend
the rolls to change the orientation and the other would
leave them in their original orientation based on the
shipping instructions.
